When it comes to Azure cloud, CSPs often keep their cloud cost calculator at hand and try to limit the average cost of cloud computing every month. In reality, there are a lot of things to do (and NOT do) if you wish to keep your average cost of azure cloud computing under control. Here’s a Do and Don’t guide to keep your costs under control and your business running smooth:

DO: Carefully select VM size

For an effective cost saving, it is essential that you carefully select the size of your Virtual machine. With burst-able virtual machines being in the norm, it is always ideal to invest in a B-series machine for almost half the price you’d normally pay for a regular machine.

DO: Go for reusing what you wish to throw away

People often overspend on the items they need and make them from scratch. It is always a good idea to reuse existing resources or previously dumped items that were created but never used. For example, instead of taking up more and more App Service Plans for web apps, it is always a good idea to reuse plans for web apps that are no longer active or in running order. Similarly Azure cloud functions can be reused from multiple applications in the same company’s applications.

DO: Go for Automation

Automation is one thing that can lead you to huge costs savings in your entire business setup. It is always great to get your hands on an automation platform and save cloud costs for your organizations.

ALSO READ: The Right Direct CSP | Your Gateway to a Successful Cloud Business

DON’T: Be Reactive

It is always advisable to not take decision and be reactive. For example, instead of shutting down Virtual Machines that you no longer need, it is always advisable to take informed decision regarding VMs’ specs when you first deploy them. A better approach would be to stay better off with a smaller VM that runs for a bit longer than a large VM which you have to shut down in order to keep your average cost of cloud computing below the bar.

DON’T: Restrict Azure Cloud Usage

A better way to save costs is to let the developers do with Azure Cloud and let their skills take out the creativity from within. According to Chris Johnson, an Azure MVP, limiting what your developers can do with the cloud goes against what the cloud is all about.

DON’T: Run resources while you don’t need them

You must think it contradicts Point 4 in the list, but in reality, if you stop extra resources at night time, on weekends, on public holidays or whenever possible, you do get to save a lot of computing. One more aspect of this point is you must delete or get rid of resources like Delete unused EC2/RDS/Elastic ache instances or unattached EBS volumes you no longer need. This way, you won’t be paying extra

MachPanel Automation module for Microsoft Hyper-V

“Hyper-V vs. VMware” has always been a heated debate. Ever since the cloud has gained popularity in the cloud business space, much debate has been going around on which hypervisor is better, VMware vSphere® hypervisor or Microsoft® Hyper-V®. As a matter of fact, each of the two has its own strengths and weaknesses. For a better understanding of both platforms, we’ll delve into a basic feature comparison of both so you can get a clear picture of the two.

It comes as a little surprise that VMware’s products especially VMware vSphere hypervisor are a lot mature since VMware vSphere hypervisor has been longer in the game than Microsoft Hyper-V. However, Microsoft Hyper-V has a few features that best fit in the modern-day enterprise environment.

Hyper-V vs. VMware on Workload Migration

While working in virtual environments, workload migration becomes a basic necessity. VMware has vMotion and Hyper-V offers Live Migration. While the former is a part of VMware vSphere and supports seamless migration in real time to balance server loads, Live Migration also supports migrations with Zero Downtime. Experts believe the implementation of Live Migration is complex than vMotion since Live Migration requires Microsoft Failover Clustering to be set up before actually performing the migration.

Hyper-V vs. VMware comparison on Architecture

When it comes to architecture, Hyper-V has two variants: Hyper-V role and Hyper-V server. The underlying architecture is built over micro-kernelized hypervisors. This means it follows the model where a host provides direct access to hardware resources. It also allows for the isolation of Virtual Machines into logical units known as partitions

On the other hand, vSphere is a collection of different components. At the core, there is VMware ESXi which is a native hypervisor that manages host servers and also multiple guest Virtual machines. Hence the VMware ESXi manages and enables computing resources shared by all Virtual machines running across the system. ESXi VMware vSphere hypervisor reduces overhead on the system as introduced in its earlier versions.

Hyper-V vs. VMware on Management Tools

Management tools are yet again very important while working in virtualized environments. VMware vSphere hypervisor offers vCenter which offers centralized data management for effective virtualized cloud infrastructures. It allows for viewing and controlling of ESXi hosts and host clusters

Microsoft Offers Microsoft System Centre Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM). It allows for management of multiple VMs running in same environment and also allows admins to create, control and delete VMs. It provides access to memory, drivers, storage and other areas for better resource management.

Hyper-V vs. VMware on Snapshot Technology

In order to capture a point in time copy of a Virtual machine including the containing data, snapshot technology is used. It comes in handy when any VM is disaster struck. VMware vSphere hypervisor offers snapshots white Hyper-V offers Checkpoints.

With Snapshot, you can take 32 snapshots per VM, store the snapshot in files like normal files in a VM and it is transient in nature. On the other hand, Checkpoints are persistent in nature, there is an option to take 64 snapshots for each VM and they are saved in host server which can be exported later. That is an essential thing for any cloud business.

There are many issues that arise when Hyper-V VMs are being replicated to Azure. Even though Hyper-V is an established platform, but with upgrades from various other services, there are times when you face issues related to storage, migration failures, backup problems and availability issues. Let’s look at a few of these issues.

Storage Problems

One of the biggest problem businesses face after their business tends to scale is the slow storage performance. One big reason for this issue is the storage architecture within the Microsoft Hyper-V environment. It is important to check whether the virtual machine component is properly placed. Virtual machine components have to reside on a dedicated storage. And the architecture should deliver mirror redundancy. We will see this in Backup related problems in a few minutes. To cater for the issue of slow Storage problem, Microsoft prefers every Cloud service Provider implements VHDX based virtual hard disks for a better Storage performance to avoid Hyper-V cloud issues.

iSCSI Multi-Path Not Working Correctly

For SMBs, iSCSI storage is a popular choice. With this, you can get the benefits of a shared and clustered environment without the cost and complexity of a Fiber Channel. With any issue arising with Microsoft Multi-path, it is important to verify the Multi-Path I/O first using:

Get-WindowsFeature –Name ‘Multipath-IO’

If the feature isn’t installed in the first place, you can install it by the following command:

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature –Online –FeatureName MultiPathIO

After this, you can make sure that there are no configuration issues using the Multi-Path I/O Control Panel to avoid any Hyper V cloud issues.

Live Migration Failure

This is typically the most annoying issue that your customers can experience. To avoid a Live migration failure, it is important to take services from an experienced Cloud Service Provider who has a team of experts to know how to avoid a Live Migration failure and other Hyper-V cloud issues. However, if such an issue arises, it is important to perform the following checks:

Check for Missing permissions

Validate any incorrect Authentication protocol

Check for Mix Match configurations

Backup Related Problems

As mentioned above, a misconfiguration or wrong judgment at the time of placement of virtual machine leads to backup and storage problems. The best possible way to cater this issue is to create Child VM Snapshot backups. This is done by deploying a Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) having three main components: VSS Writer, VSS Requestor and VSS Provider.

VSSAdmin is a command line tool used to diagnose Volume Shadow Copy Services problems.
